Searsport Elementary & Middle School Students Earn a Positive Trip on the Downeast Scenic Railroad

posted Jun 12, 2015, 6:21 AM by Brian Richards
Students from Searsport Elementary and Middle School caught a ride on the Downeast Scenic Railroad on Thursday, June 11th as a reward for their academic diligence and positive behavior.  This trip was made possible by the RSU#20 After School Program, and a grant given to the Downeast Scenic Railroad.
Seated in one of the two restored vintage coaches, elementary and middle school students took turns riding in the train's open air "dining" car. Our trip took us along a restored 9 mile long section of the old Maine Central Railroad's "Calais Branch Line".

All along the route students experienced the history behind the
Downeast Scenic Railroad, Ellsworth and its surrounding wildlife,
and get a feel for Turn of the century train travel. For some students, this was their first time riding on a train.

With perfect weather, the trip was a huge success generating considerable excitement among the students. Throughout the trip railroad staff took the time to answer students' questions, including the occasional question as to whether the train could take them to Hogwarts.

On behalf of all of us who went, we would like to thank the staff of the Downeast Scenic Railroad, the RSU#20 After School program, and our parents and staff who attended as chaperones, with a special thanks to Miss Mariko, and Mrs. Jessica Fuller for their energy in coordinating the trip for the middle school students.
