What PBL? Why PBL? Want PBL! ~ From the Buck Institute

Now that our school year is up and under way, we’d like to tell you about one way we are improving the teaching and learning in our classrooms. In the next ten articles, we will explore the method of teaching and learning known as Project Based Learning, or PBL. We are using PBL to make our classrooms more engaging and effective.

The world is changing rapidly. To do well in college and careers, today’s students need to learn more than they did in the past. Employers tell us they want people who can solve problems, work well in teams, communicate effectively, and use their creative ideas on the job. In addition, the new Common Core Standards that guide what we teach – and which our schools’ performance will be measured by – reflect these 21st century demands. 

To meet these needs, we are adding PBL to our teachers’ toolboxes. In PBL, students are given a complex task that takes several days or weeks to complete. Their task could be to solve a real-world problem, make a presentation about a topic they’ve studied in depth, or create something.

PBL is an active, interesting way to learn. Projects motivate students to gain knowledge, and they remember it longer than many typical school assignments. Projects also give students opportunities to use technology and connect with people in the world outside of school. With PBL, students will still learn English, math, science, history, and other subjects. But they will also build the skills needed for success in college and careers: critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity.

We will keep you informed about how we’re developing our PBL program in the weeks and months to come. You will also hear about the exciting projects being planned by our teachers, and how you can become involved in this effort to bring 21st century learning to our students.
